Nine students from across the metro area won awards for designing a book cover as part of Price Chopper’s annual “Bag Your Favorite Book” contest. One winner per grade was selected from more than 9,500 entries. This year’s fifth grade winner was Pioneer Ridge Middle School student Madeline Clark.
From Sept. 8 to Oct. 15, students in elementary, middle school and junior high throughout the Kansas City area entered the “Bag Your Favorite Book” contest by designing an original cover of a book. Clark designed a cover for her favorite book, Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. Price Chopper representatives and the “Price Chopper Chompers” notified Clark of her award by surprising her and her classmates with a surprise visit on Dec. 16.  She was awarded a classroom party and a $500 donation for the school’s library.
“Bag Your Favorite Book” is one of two programs under Price Chopper’s “Feeding the Reading Appetite” literacy initiative. Price Chopper launched “Feeding the Reading Appetite” in 2007 to provide teaches a new way to incent their students to read more.
