Battling until the end, the Pioneer Ridge Middle School seventh grade varsity football team lost a hard fought 20-6 decision to visiting Ottawa last week.
Early on, Pioneer took control. The Jags went up 6-0, thanks to a touchdown strike from Tyler Goetzmann to Kolby Gretencord.
Ottawa answered with a long drive of its own tying the score at 6-6 to end the first quarter.
“We did a nice job of executing our game plan early,” said Coach Jeff Davidson. “The team has been working hard at practice and making improvements.”
Just before halftime, Ottawa launched another long touchdown drive to put the score at the half. The Jags came back with a long drive, but were stymied by penalties.
Defenses dominated the second half, but Ottawa managed a late fourth-quarter score to seal the verdict.
Leading the Jag defense were Brock Stewart, Jacob Butash, Austin Oldham, Brian Oneri and Skylar Buie.
“I was real proud of the effort,” added Davidson. “We are getting better.”
