The Wheatridge Middle School 7th grade girls varsity basketball team collected their third win of the season Nov. 19, a 23-21 overtime thriller at Louisburg.
The game was a grind-it-out affair with defense setting the tone in the first half. The Mustangs headed into the halftime break up two at 8-6, largely on the defensive efforts of posts Aaliyah Green and Ellie Parks.
The lead switched hands multiple times in the second half, before the teams ended up tied at 17-17 at the end of regulation. In the extra frame, buckets by Green and Parks and a pair of free throws from point guard Hannah Phipps proved to be the distance. A long desperation jumper from the Wildcats fell short and was rebounded by Phipps who dribbled out the clock to preserve the Mustang victory.
Green led Wheatridge in scoring with 10, while Parks added 8 and Phipps racked up five.
The Mustangs have now established a penchant for last minute thrillers, with their last four games being decided by a total of six points.
