A big crowd turned out Saturday night, February 21, as the Sons of the American Legion held their 6th Annual Mouse Races at American Legion Post #19 in Gardner. The event is a fundraiser for various charities supported by the Legion.
Claud Hobby of Post 19 said he expected around $4000 to be raised at the event. Over $20,000 has been collected in the five previous years. This money supports local charities, including the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, the Gardner Food Bank and the Sons of American Legion’s Scholarship & General Fund.

Big O Tires of Gardner was the primary sponsor for the event. Sponsors help cover expenses and donate prizes. Other local sponsors included Express Shell, Car Pool, Price Chopper, Gambino’s Pizza and the Tumbleweed Bar & Grill.
In addition to mouse races, there were other games, such as Mouse Roulette, and raffles for prizes, which included Flat screen TV’s and $2000 worth of gift certificates.
By 7 pm the parking lot was full and spilled out into the surrounding streets. It was estimated that over 250 attended the event.
