Margaret Joan McCarthy, 89, of Edgerton, Kan, died peacefully in the family home on April 3, 2019.
Joan was born Nov. 22, 1929 in rural Spring Hill, Kan to John Homer and Mabel Margaret (Harper) Griffin. She was a lifelong resident of the area. Joan graduated in 1947 from the Ursaline Academy in Paola, Kan. She attended Gardner High School during her junior year. After attending Emporia State Teacher’s College, she taught in one-room rural schools until she married Edward Neal McCarthy on Aug. 24, 1950 in Gardner, Kan. Joan and Neal were married for 57 years, until his death in 2007. They lived in Edgerton until moving to the family farm in 1957, where they raised eight children. Once her children were older, she worked as a special education paraprofessional at Gardner Edgerton High School and at Edgerton Elementary. She was a proud, active and faithful member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Edgerton, KS. Joan enjoyed spending time with her growing family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Neal; daughters-in-law: Sherri McCarthy and Donna McCarthy; great-grandson Wyatt McCarthy and brothers: John D. and Bill Griffin and sister, Carrol Brennan. Joan is survived by her children: Karen Curtin, Manhattan, Kan, Barb (Robert) Kearney, Suffolk, Va, John (Joan) McCarthy, Admire, Kan, David McCarthy, Pomona, Kan, Jean (Mike) Norris, Edgerton, Kan, Dan McCarthy, Spring Hill, Kan, Bob (Melissa) McCarthy, Edgerton, Kan and Anita (Dennis) Lickteig, Olathe, Kan; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, including Kevin Brennan and Theresa Knipp.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Wed., April 10, 2019 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main, Gardner, Kan Burial follows at St. Columbine Catholic Cemetery, Edgerton, Kan.
