Lorena Martha Scott Voigts, 95, Gardner, Kan., passed away July 22, 2011 at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital in Gardner.
Lorena was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Topeka, Kan. to Carl and Minnie Maude (Browning) Scott. She was a graduate of Topeka High School. Lorena married William Fredrick Voigts Aug. 30, 1936 in Lenexa, Kan. They lovingly shared 74 years together.
They moved to Gardner in 1958, lived in Holton, Kan. and Hiawatha, Kan. and then moved back to Gardner.
She was an accomplished ceramic painter and taught ceramics in every town she lived in. She referred to herself as a “brush mechanic” instead of an artist. She enjoyed learning from all those who came to her ceramics classes and often said she learned more from them than they learned from her. She spent her later years helping William at their son Bill’s greenhouse. William and Lorena enjoyed selling produce at the Overland Park outdoor City Market. She also painted faces on many pumpkins and gourds to sell at the greenhouse.
She enjoyed playing pinochle, pitch, and dominos at the Gardner Senior Center. She graciously welcomed all to her home, always offering freshly baked cookies or inviting you to stay to enjoy a meal. Her loving smile will be missed.
She attended the First Baptist Church of Gardner. She was a member of Eastern Star, Gardner Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband William on Dec. 23, 2010.
Lorena is survived by her sons William F. Voigts, Jr. of Wellsville, Kan. and Scott E. Voigts and wife Shawn of Robinson, Kan.; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Graveside Services will be 9:30 a.m. July 27, 2011 at Gardner Cemetery. She will be in state from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, Kan. (913) 856-7111.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Gardner. Condolences may be sent to www.brucefuneralhome.com.
