Varsity kicked off the night with a 2-0 defeat of Shawnee Mission Northwest (25-14, 25-21). The girls did a great job of applying what we had been working on in film and practice, and really began to play together as a united team. Offensively, JR Morgan McIntire was on fire with nine kills on the match. SR Kyla Shappell had two huge aces to close out the match, including one on match point. Defensively, SO Kendra Wait picked up 15 digs while Morgan McIntire added 9. JR Holly Maska and Kyla Shappell contributed 8 digs apiece as well. SR Gabbie Bishop and Kendra Wait put down four blocks apiece, while FR Jaylyne Bell added two blocks in the defeat.
Varsity followed up on their impressive first match with a defeat of #2 Olathe Northwest, the defending state champions. For returning players, it was a bit of a grudge match, as GE had fallen to ONW in the substate finals last year. GE came out ready to play and defeated ONW in straight sets, with scores of 25-15 and 25-21.
The Blazers played spectacular defense, highlighted by one ball saved by Morgan McIntire running and jumping off of a wall. Kyla Shappell, Morgan McIntire, Emma Prothe and Kendra Wait picked up seven digs apiece. The offense was led by Morgan McIntire with 10 kills, followed by Kyla Shappell with seven. Emma Prothe served up two aces over the course of the match as well. It was a true team win, celebrated by Sonic ice cream on the way home as a treat for going 2-0 on the road.
