It’s that time of year again. In most corners of the country, people are enjoying the scents and sights of fall – leaves, turning and falling, in shades of red, orange and gold, and summer growing old.
But the colors blazing in Gardner and Edgerton this time of year are not of nature. Instead, the predominant colors of this area are blue and white.
The Blazer football squad is inching toward what it hopes will be another run at a state title this year. With only a few games left, it’s do or die, and Blazer fans are showing their support – on the windows of businesses, on their tailgates and on their person in the form of Blazer spirit wear.
Last Friday, the Blazer squad squeaked past intra-league rival St. Thomas Aquinas. This Friday, they take on a whole new challenge — Blue Valley High School.
The Tigers are a one-loss team, and the winner of Friday night’s game will take the Eastern Kansas League Title and will take the District 4 Championship. The game’s outcome will also impact seeding for the 5A state play-offs. Last year, the Tigers knocked GEHS out of the state play-offs. And a win for the Tigers at this week’s game could effectively do the same. Because there are four teams in the district vying for two play-off spots, a GE loss could lead to a point differential decision for those slots. A win, and the Blazers are in.
Additionally, The budding of a giant rivalry are taking seed making Friday’s game a must-see.
The Trailblazers definitely have the support of this community behind them, but they’ll need to hear our voices at Friday night’s game to give them the extra edge that a loud home crowd can produce in a big game.
It’s time to really rally behind the Blazer football squad with the biggest audience of the season.
Are you ready for some football? We hope to see you in the stands on Friday night.
