The GFWC Athena of Gardner met at 1:00 p.m. on October 19, 2016, at the Gardner branch of the Johnson County Library. Roll call was answered with a fact about the Great Smoky Mountain National Park or the Shenandoah National Park. Our speaker was Christelle Porter, a veteran hiker and visitor of many of our national parks. She gave a presentation about her experiences and introduced us to a number of interesting park facts. Ms. Porter had many colorful photos to share, reminding us how stunningly beautiful our national parks are. Ruth Hermon gave a report on the September Mississippi Valley Region Conference in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. She shared information and handouts collected at the event and gave an interesting overview of the three day activities. Committee reports were given followed by discussion about some of our community projects scheduled for this club year. In November, our group will enjoy an educational tour followed by the club meeting. We adjourned for refreshments and visiting. Athena welcomes all interested women of the community to join in helping with a multitude of community projects focusing on but not limited to children, education, music and the arts.
