The Kansas City Metro Chiefs and Sheriffs Association awarded two Gardner police officers with its “Bronze Award of Valor.”
The award recognizes police officers for their professionalism and their commitment above the normal call of service.
Sergeant Steve Benz and Officer Cody Waggoner were nominated for their response to a physical disturbance call on March 19 of this year. When officers arrived at the scene, they were confronted by a man armed with a knife. Benz and Waggoner were able to take the man into custody without harm to him or themselves.
Acting Gardner Police Captain Jay Belcher asked Gardner residents to join him in congratulating the duo.
“Their quick action prevented a dangerous situation from becoming a tragic one,” he said in a press release.
The officers will receive their awards in a formal ceremony to be held on Nov. 21.
