Rallying from an early deficit, the Gardner ‘Heat’ 9-10 girls softball squad defeated Spring Hill 5-4 and won the post-season tournament title, June 26 in Spring Hill.
Gardner, 14-0, tied the title game at 4-4 and then scored the winning run in the last inning to win the title.
“It was an exciting season for the girls,” said Coach Kent McIntire. “All the coaches are very proud of the girls’ efforts and playing together as a team. Although we weren’t down in games often, when we did trail, the team kept its poise and rallied.”
The ‘Heat’ rarely trailed, out-scoring its opponents 136-26 and during league play shut out three teams and held six teams to two runs or less.
McIntire praised the efforts of pitching coach Tim Rodgers and assistants Bill Boyer, Tony Nelson, Mike Muehe, and Tom Galvin.
