This year, Gardner joins Edgerton and Spring Hill in allowing fireworks.
For the first time, Gardner residents can legally use fireworks in Gardner on July 3 and 4, according to an ordinance passed at the March 7 city council meeting.
“The Gardner Police Department will be proactive in monitoring the use of fireworks in our city during the week leading up to and including the July 4th holiday to ensure compliance with the new fireworks ordinance and to maintain the safest possible environment for all of our residents,” said James Pruetting, chief of the Gardner Police Department. “The safety and security of our residents is our number one priority, and we encourage anyone engaging in the use of fireworks to be mindful of the potential dangers and to exercise due caution to avoid placing themselves or others in harm’s way.”
Fireworks can only be discharged July 3-4 from 10 a.m. until midnight. Violations would be considered an unclassified misdemeanor, punishable by a fine in an amount not to exceed $500 and/or confinement in the county jail for a period not to exceed one month. Specific information regarding the city’s new ordinance can be found on the city’s website.
Also under the new Gardner ordinance, the sale of fireworks is permitted from June 28 thru July 4 within the city limits. Five permits have been issued.
Residents who purchase fireworks should be cautious about where they transport them, and Johnson County residents should know the ordinances where they plan to set the fireworks off. Individuals breaking county fireworks regulations could be fined, with fines ranging from $25 to $100.
