Evelyn A. Pickert, 85, passed away April 9, 2016, at Olathe Medical Center Hospice House.
Evelyn was born March 31, 1931 in Downers Grove, Ill. to Marion Alice (Stein) and Arnold Francis Roeckers. The family moved to Richmond, Kan. in 1944. She later returned to Downer’s Grove and graduated from Nazareth Academy’s class of 1949. She received a teacher’s certificate at Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kan. Her first year of teaching was in a one room schoolhouse in Scipio, Kan. Evelyn taught in Gardner Elementary for two years. Evelyn married Vernon Pickert on August 10, 1953 in Richmond and they moved to Gardner. She was a dedicated member at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, singing in the choir, arranging funeral dinners and was a CCD director for many years. She regularly visited the residents at Medical Lodge, served at the Gardner Senior Service Center for over 20 years, was instrumental in running “The Clothes Closet” for Gardner area residents through the Johnson County Multi Service Center, and received the Gardner “Citizen of the Year Award” in 1991. In 2003, Evelyn and husband Vernon were honored at the Johnson County Fair Parade as the Grand Marshalls. Evelyn was equally dedicated to her family. She loved spending time with her grandkids, attending many of their activities. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Angela Lindsey, siblings Colleen M Pattison, Phyllis A. Hendrickson, and Robert F. Roeckers. Evelyn is survived by her husband Vernon, of the home; daughters Donna M. Goss and Loren, and Martina J. Tinsley and Keith all of Gardner, sons Daniel G. Pickert of Ottawa, Kan and Douglas E. Pickert and Janet of De Soto, Kan; son-in-law Gary Lindsey of Overland Park, Kan; 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am April 14, at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W Main, Gardner, Kan. Burial will follow at St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery in Gardner. Memorial Contributions may be given to American Macular Degeneration Foundation, the Olathe Medical Center Hospice House or Catholic Charities of NE Kansas.
