Carle was born Nov. 26, 1920 in Hulbert, Okla., in the family hotel to Ollie Beanstock Scott and Austin Denver Baker and grew up during the days of the Great Depression.  Because of his father’s work, his family traveled from town to town; by the time he graduated from high school, he had attended 41 different schools.  He was a 1937 graduate of Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson, Kan  He served in the U. S. Army, stationed in various locations during World War II, including one year as a White House guard, where he befriended President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his dog, Falla.  In 1947, he met and married Martha Grace Chadwick in Hutchinson, establishing a home and raising their five children. Working at Security Grain Elevator as Superintendent, he was involved with the filming of the motion picture, Picnic, becoming good friends with the star, William Holden.  In 1960, Carle took the Superintendent’s position at Producer’s Grain Elevator in Amarillo, Texas, where he became Vice President of Operations until retirement in 1982.  Carle was a voracious reader, a wonderful storyteller (some real whoppers) and enjoyed a good game of golf.  He also enjoyed writing poetry and could play a mean guitar.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at the Prince of Peace Chapel in Resurrection Cemetery, 8321 Quivira Rd, Lenexa.

Carle was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Buster Hammond; his sister, Phyllis Stowers; his son, Damon Scott Baker; and his wife, Marty.  He is survived by his children, Carle Baker, Jr (Marie-Therese) of Stilwell, Kan., Linus Baker (Terri) of Stilwell, Kan., Shannon Cavner (Randy) of Gardner, Kan. and Tye Baker of Grandview, Mo.,  and his sister, Barbie Smith of Valdosta, Ga.  He is also survived by his grandchildren:  Candice Sanchez, Karli Weese (Luke), Janele Rohlmeier (Mike), Jami Nato (Mark), Audrey Baker (Zach), Andrew Baker, Courtney Wuellner (Kyle),  Jason Baker, Chance Baker, Grant Baker, Keaton Baker, Dakota Ellis, Maggie Baker,  Shadow Ellis, Grason Cavner, Kate Cavner and eight great-grandchildren.
