Coby Morris’ gold medal at 189 pounds highlighted an impressive performance by the Spring Hill Bronco wrestling team at the Hays Invitational, Jan. 19-21.
Morris, a junior and number eight seed, gave the Broncos momentum with his gold medal performance.
“I was real pleased with Coby’s effort,” said Coach Tucker Woofter. “It gave us a lot of momentum.”
Equally impressive was sophomore Corey Spader, who brought back a silver medal at 112 pounds.
Third-place awards went to senior Taylor Kettler (215 pounds) and freshman Blake Hampton (160 pounds).
A fourth-place award went to senior Michael Nemer at 119 pounds.
Stepping up with a fifth-place finish at 152 pounds was junior Jeff Lovetinsky. He replaced an injured Charlie Briggs in the line-up and responded with an inspiring performance.
“Jeff stepped up and really did an excellent job,” Woofter added.
Earning sixth place at 171 pounds was junior Tyler Jensen.
Teamwise, Spring Hill finished sixth place in a competitive field of 24 teams.
“Overall, I was real pleased with our performance,” Woofter added. “We overcame some injuries and had some encouraging efforts.”
It will be a busy week for the Broncos. The junior varsity travels to Blue Valley Northwest on Jan. 26 and the Fort Scott Invitational, Jan. 29. The varsity travels to the Baldwin Invite, Jan. 29.
