The Lady Blazers hosted the Piper Pirates in a very special “friendly” regular season match that brought two teams together April 21 to play for something bigger than themselves.
Both teams wore the same pink warm-ups and played in support of Ashley Gorney, coach. Gorney is the wife of Jared Gorney, coach, and she teaches Spanish and also coaches at Gardner Edgerton High School.
The crowd and teams raised almost $700. The money came from Gardner and Piper fans, and the Piper team presented the Gorney’s with a check of $340. All other monies will be donated to Parker Monhollon, Olathe, who is fighting for her life against brain cancer.
Junior varisty won their match and go 5-5 on the season with a 3-0 win over Piper. JV was clearly dominant on the pitch last night as Olivia Hogue received a nice through ball from Kaylyn Gordon and scored a goal. The next goal came on a Lexi Bryan breakaway as a lone goal, and finally Hogue found the net again with a cross ball played by Jamie Gaither for the assist.
Megan Weatherington, goalie, recorded her sixth shut out of the season.
Varsity played an excellent first half, but could not take advantage of the two corners and seven great opportunities. The second half was a struggle for Gardner, as the Pirates got through defense and made a goal early.
In an effort to chase a goal, Walt Cochran, coach, put numbers forward. “We continued to have opportunities but could not convert in the offensive 1/3 and eventually dropped the match 0-3,” Cochran said. “Varsity goes 1-9 on the season has we head into our final weeks of play.”
