The Gardner Edgerton High School wrestling team will return to action after the holiday break with a trip to Newton for the Tournament of Champions. The tournament runs Jan. 16-17.
This year’s champion invitational includes 10-ranked Kansas teams. Top entrants include Garden City High School, ranked number one in class 6A; Manhattan High School, which ranks fourth in 6A; Wichita Northwest High School, which ranks sixth in 6A; and Maize High School, which rounds out the 6A top 10.
Top 5A squads will be represented as well. Emporia High School ranks fifth, Mill Valley High School ranks sixth, and Andover Central High School ranks tenth. Other top-ranked teams include 3A class’s number one, Norton High School and third-ranked Colby High School in 4A.
Before the break, the Blazers brought back a fifth place finish from the Johnson County Classic.
Tyler Norton led the way with a second place finish at 132 pounds, while freshman Jensen McDermott took third at 113 pounds, and Dustin Carstens took third at 170 pounds.
T.J. Burger took fifth at 138 pounds, Andrew Sprague finished in sixth at 220 pounds, and Edrick Rouse took sixth at 185 pounds.
