Fire crews responded to a fire at Big O Tires, 331 E. Main, Gardner about 3 p.m. Aug. 28. Winds blew smoke throughout the downtown area and police directed traffic. When Fire District #1 arrived on the scene they found heavy fire on the south side of the building consuming a large used tire pile. The fire had started and spread to the roof of the building. Crews quickly worked to extinguish the fire before it involved more of the building. Due to the heat, mutual aid units from Olathe, Fire District 2 and Northwest Consolidated fire district worked to contain the fire. The City of Gardner provided a Backhoe to assist the firefighters with digging through the pile of tires. Due to the location, of the fire 56 Highway was closed near the scene for the duration of the incident and was re-opened after the fire was extinguished.
