Juan Garcia III, Global Leader for Career Advancement at Amazon, provided insight into the online retailer’s “Peculiar Approach to Employee Engagement” June 16 at LPKC in Edgerton.
Donald Roberts, Edgerton mayor and a member of the Gardner Rotary Club, helped coordinate Garcia’s visit to Southwest Johnson County. “From the time Amazon expressed an interest in its Edgerton facility it has pledged to integrate with the community,” Roberts said. “Juan Garcia’s willingness to speak to and answer questions from a local service organization is evidence of that expressed commitment.”
Among the elected officials and local business leaders who attended the event were: Roberts;p Kenneth Cook, community development director Edgerton ; Chris Morrow, mayor of Gardner; Kristina Harrison, Gardner city council member; Ed Eilert, chairman Johnson County Board of County Commissioners; and Jason Camis, president Gardner Edgerton Chamber of Commerce.
Garcia discussed Amazon’s recruitment and retention efforts in advance of hiring approximately 1,000 full-time employees at the online retailer’s announced 822,100-square-foot fulfillment center at Kansas City Logistics Park.
Prior to joining Amazon in 2015, Garcia served as assistant secretary of the Navy (2009-2015) and is a former member of the Texas House of Representatives.
At Amazon, Garcia oversees programs to help more than 200,000 associates around the world advance their careers at Amazon or elsewhere. Those programs include Career Choice, where Amazon pre-pays tuition and fees for employees to take courses for in-demand jobs, and “The Offer,” where once a year Amazon offers to pay employees to quit.
