The Olathe Memorial Cemetery (738 N. Chestnut St.), was awarded a $90,000 Heritage Trust Fund Grant. Funding from the grant will go towards the restoration of the chapel with plans to use the chapel for family services.
The chapel at the Olathe Memorial Cemetery was built in the 1930s as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression. It served as a place for families to have small burial services. Currently, the chapel is used as office space.
A few years ago, the Olathe Memorial Cemetery was added to the national, state and local historic registries because of its rich history, prominent burials, award-winning trees and historical buildings and structures.
The restoration is slated to be completed within a year and staff is looking forward to having the building restored to its former glory. Visit Cemetery.OlatheKs.org or call 913-971-5226 for more information about the Olathe Memorial Cemetery.
