Recruiting efforts made by staff from across the district have yielded 25 new substitute employees.
Twelve candidates meet the criteria to serve as classroom teachers. Most of the new substitute teachers recently completed their student teaching in USD 231 and surrounding communities.
The remaining new substitutes have been designated as classified only subs. This group is composed of current college students that have returned home for December and January.
The classified subs will primarily serve as paraprofessionals when a building has a need for coverage. Of those recruited, 14 of the 25 new subs were graduates of Gardner Edgerton High School.
In November, the district increased substitute pay from $120 to $130 per day. Rates for long-term substitutes went from $145 to $160 per day.
Rates of pay for para substitutes are established at $95 to $105 (for specialized programs) per day.
