A cat initially reported as missing was found safely by fire crews on an early morning call.
Johnson County Fire District #1 was dispatched Oct. 18 to the 700 Block of S. Evergreen St. in Gardner for a fire report indicating the back of the building was on fire, and that all occupants except a feline were out of the structure.
The first arriving unit found heavy fire showing on the back-side of the building and began extinguishing it while additional units arrived on the scene. The majority of the fire was quickly contained.
Other units on the scene began extinguishing smaller fires throughout the structure.
The involved structure included two separate residences that were attached. Two adults, one child, and one cat were displaced due to the fire.
The feline that was initially reported as missing was found by one of the crews and is in stable condition.
The cause of this fire is still under investigation.
