Varsity traveled to Washburn Rural Sept. 28 for a grueling round robin plus bracket play tournament.
The #4 Blazers faced tough competition all day, starting with a controversial loss to #3 Blue Valley High, 25-23, 23-25, 28-30. The Blazers rebounded with a win over Maize, 25-14, 25-16, followed by a difficult loss to #2 Washburn Rural, 28-26, 16-25, 24-26.
The Blazers finished pool play with a loss to Kapaun, then had an immediate rematch, playing Kapaun again in bracket play. The Blazers came away with the win this time, 25-20, 27-25, before falling to Washburn again in the final.
The Blazers finished second overall.
“I am proud of how hard the team worked; it was a difficult tournament filled with adversity on all sides, but the team took advantage of the opportunity to compete and get better as a team while facing tough competition,” said Alexandra Fitzmorris-Sorn, coach.
Some notable performances included Morgan McIntire with 21 kills vs Blue Valley, Jaylyne Bell with 13 kills vs BV, Kendra Wait with seven blocks vs BV, Erin Michael with 20 digs vs BV, Holly Maska with two aces vs Maize, Gracen Mealman with a career-high 11 kills in the first WR match, and Jordan Boone with five blocks vs. Kapaun.
