Congratulations to the USD 231 school board for reaching out for a personnel and communication study from the Kansas Association of School Boards.
The KASB spent five days in the district interviewing employees and summarizing the results.
The report covered many areas including an administrative structure review and comparisons to similar districts.
USD 231 compared favorably to most of the other districts. With an enrollment of 5,350, Gardner Edgerton has a ratioof pupils to total building level positions of 314.7 compared to DeSoto’s 337 (enrollment 6,740).
Comments made by staff who were interviewed was primarily positive, some middle of the road and some negative.
Negative feedback is always difficult to take, but you can’t find a solution without first recognizing a problem.
Communication seems to be what’s most lacking in the district, by pinpointing the areas that need improvement, it gives board members the resources to make USD 231 a better place.
With all the changes in USD 231 in the last few years – leadership change, enrollment growth, construction and upcoming school boundary changes – it’s a good time to review district structure and implement changes where needed.
Thank you BOE members for being proactive rather than reactive. By acknowledging weaknesses, you can build strength.
