The 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District is bringing back the popular Senior Follies. This special event promises an exciting afternoon of great entertainment for the whole family in late August.
The Senior Follies will take place beginning at 2 p.m. on Aug. 19, at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, located in the former King Louie Building at 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., and the event is expected to last about two hours.
About 20 acts are expected for this year’s show, including singers, dancers, musicians, and comedians. No additional acts are being sought at this time.
JCPRD hosted the first follies event in 2007 as the Men’s Follies. In fall 2010, a Women’s Follies event was introduced and was also well received. The following year the events were into a single Senor Follies, which was also successful. The event has taken a hiatus since the last follies was presented in 2014. The new Black Box Theatre seemed like the perfect location at which to revive this event.
As configured for this event, The Black Box Theatre will seat about 247 people and organizers expect the venue may fill. The theatre is The Theatre in the Park’s new year-round venue to supplement its summer productions in Shawnee Mission Park.
