A 15 year old is in custody with charges pending resulting from a police chase and injury accident that happened July 29.
A vehicle check near East Lincoln Lane and North Moonlight Rd. resulted in a car chase down I-435 after the youth put his Chevrolet Malibu in gear and fled the scene.
A Gardner officer was hit. Caleb Michael Metsinger was later arrested and is in custody.
“He’s in custody at the juvenile detention center,” said Jim Pruetting, Gardner Police Chief. “Charges are pending.”
Pruetting said the injured officer had returned to work July 31. “The officer had abrasions on the forearm and hand,” he said.
According to Kansas Highway Patrol, police chased Caleb Michael Metsinger, for aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer when he fled the scene.
While being pursued, the teen swerved to avoid stop sticks on northbound I-435. He lost control, went onto the right shoulder of the road, sideswiped a Toyota Prius, and went across all lanes of traffic.
He then crossed the median, hit a southbound Toyota Highlander head-on. The Highlander left the road, went into the right side ditch, rolled over and came to a rest on the driver’s side.
Three people in the Highlander, including Metsinger, were taken to a local hospital.
Two of those people were Chad and April Wright, who had minor injuries. The third person was their 1-year-old child, who was taken to the hospital as a precaution and was not injured according to media reports.
