Former GEHS track standout Rosa Jones recently turned in an impressive performance in the 33rd Annual Shawnee Mission Triathlon.
Jones, 28, Gardner, placed 14 of 28 in the Women’s Division and was 68th out of 102 in the total long course event.
She clocked 23:32 in the 1000 meter open water swim, 1:02.52 in the 18 mile bike event and 45:27 in the 4.5 mile run.
“This was a tough race,” said Jones, a 2007 GEHS grad. “The Mill Creek Trail has a few hills that pose a real challenge and took a toll on the overall race. When I hit the last leg of the Triathlon it took a lot of mental encouragement to power up the hills.”
Due to an Achilles heel injury suffered in March, Jones was unable to wear tennis and cycling shoes.
“I trained in sandals, and this was the first race I competed the cycling and running events in sandals,” added Jones.
After an Aug. 6 Triathlon at Rockwell, Texas, Jones returns to China to continue her seventh year teaching English at Hubei Business College in Wuhan, China.
Rosa is the daughter of BJ and Pam Jones of Gardner.
