GEHS sophomore standout Mia Tovkach shot a nine-over 81 at the Leawood Country Club to finish two strokes behind winner Megan Lucas of Washburn Rural last week.
Tovkach had to contend with 20 mile per hour winds and a nearly 90 degree day in October.
“The wind really made it difficult,” said Tovkach. “You’re almost falling over from how strong the wind was.”
Tovkach now owns a first and second place finish in 6A state competition.
Besides Tovkach, junior Hannah Trivitt shot a 101; junior Taylor Hill shot a 105; sophomore Shae Stamp shot a 110; sophomore Haley Meyer shot a 119, and Taylor Snell, 120.
Teamwise, Washburn Rural won the state title followed by Shawnee Mission East, Olathe Northwest, Blue Valley, Manhattan, Garden City, and GEHS. The seventh place state finish is the highest finish in GEHS school history
“The team had a great season,” said Coach Amy Van Rheen. “This is a very young and talented group, and I look forward to next season.”
Season highlights included a new school record team score of 351 at the Basehor-Linwood Classic. Tovkach also shot a school record low of 70. The varsity team also won the Olathe South tournament at Heritage Park.
Other notable finishes include a third place Regional finish and a seventh place state finish.
