A 1-0 win over Piper gave Coach Shelly Huber and her Spring Hill Bronco Softball team the Class 4A Division I State title last week.
Playing at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina, Spring Hill blanked rival Baldwin 6-0 in the opener and defeated Augusta 2-1 in extra innings in game two.
It took 10 innings for Spring Hill to take down Piper in the State title game.
Elizabeth Hays opened the top of the tenth inning with a double. She advanced to third on a sacrifice by Regan Smith and then Dani Townley doubled home Hays with the eventual game-winner.
In the bottom of the tenth, Spring Hill ace pitcher Sarah Brown got Piper to fly out to the outfield three times to seal the verdict.
Brown tossed a three hit shutout in the title game, striking out eleven.
“I had a great group of team players,” said Coach Huber. They did everything they could for the team and that is when you get things accomplished.”
Spring Hill reached state in dramatic fashion as well defeating Fort Scott 2-1 in eleven innings and Paola 4-1 for the Regional title.
