The filing deadline for local elections and ballot questions is noon June 1, and those wishing to register to vote have until July 12. Advance voting by mail begins July 13, 20 days prior to the Fall primary.
Voters who wish to change their party affiliation for the August Primary Election must complete a new voter registration form indicating the requested party affiliation change and submit it to the Election Office by June 1, at Noon.
The Kansas Legislature passed a law in 2014 which prohibits voters from switching parties or disaffiliating from a party during the time from the candidate filing deadline through the time when the primary election results are certified by the State Board of Canvassers. Therefore, by law, from June 1 through August 31, 2016, anyone affiliated with the Democratic, Republican, or Libertarian party may not switch to another party or elect to become unaffiliated, according to the Johnson County Election office.
