Each year, GEHS staff and students choose a philanthropy to contribute to as a community service project. This year, the organization selected was chosen for the purpose to help one of their own. This past fall, a staff member was diagnosed with breast cancer and just recently underwent surgery. To help console and comfort this staff member and her family, it was decided to purchase a reclining lift chair through the nonprofit agency, The Healing Chair-Kansas City. To purchase the chair, the staff and students needed to raise more than $650.
To raise funds, the student body initiated a week-long penny war between each grade and staff members. In just six days, the school community collected more than $1,944; more than enough to purchase two chairs. One chair will be given to their co-worker to use during her recovery process, and the other will be given to another woman in the area who is also recovering from breast cancer surgery. After the chairs have done their job to assist in the healing process, they will be utilized throughout the Kansas City area to aid in the recovery process for other women.
Media Specialist Robin Schrack lead the fund-raising effort. “I am so very proud of Blazer Nation and all they have done to support a staff member and to support such a great cause,” said Schrack.
