Facing cross town rival Wheatridge, the Pioneer Ridge seventh grade boys varsity basketball team dropped a close 50-47 in the season finale February 27.
Pioneer and WMS squared off in game two of a Saturday doubleheader at Paola. Game one saw Pioneer post a 56-46 win over Paola.
Against WMS, Pioneer trailed 13-6 after one quarter, but rallied within 27-24 by halftime.
James Cox, Hayden Dyer and Brooks Langrehr led the second quarter charge scoring 15 of the teams 18 points.
“Our scorers stepped up when needed and the team did a nice job of making good passes,” said Coach Jeff Davidson.
Strong defensive play gave Pioneer a 39-33 lead to start the fourth quarter. However, WMS stormed back and took a three point lead with four seconds left in regulation. Pioneer had a last second shot to tie the game, but folded and WMS prevailed, 40-34.
“Both teams played unbelievable basketball and gave everything they had,” added Davidson.
Dyer and Langrehr shared scoring honors with 13 apiece. Kody Hughes added nine and James Cox had six points.
It was a different story in game one as Pioneer posted a 56-46 win over Paola.
Pioneer jumped to a 14-8 first quarter lead and took a slim 22-21 halftime lead. The Jags added 34 second half points to secure the win.
Tye Wood led the way with 14 points and Langrehr added 12 points. Hughes had eight points.
With the win, Pioneer closed the season at 9-7.
“The coaching staff would like to thank all the parent and fans for their support,” added Davidson.
