The Gardner Athena GFWC met at 1:00 p.m. on January 20, 2016 at the Gardner branch of the Johnson County Library. Members answered roll call with a favorite fad. Given that the group is made up of both young and old, it was fun to hear members reminisce about what used to be “in”. The January program entitled, “125 Years of Fashion”, presented by member Laura McCarthy of the Gardner Historical Museum, focused on trends specific to wedding gowns. She brought photos of gowns that have been donated to the museum over the years and it was interesting to note how the styles have changed. Whether simply made or very ornate, some elements seem to be traditional and are present in all the dresses. Committee reports were given as well as national and international GFWC news highlights. Nominations were taken for new officers and voting followed. Results are: President, Cathy Baker; Vice-President, Linda Loyd; Secretary, Mary Pritchard; and Treasurer, Laura McCarthy. Congratulations to our new officers to be installed at the May meeting to begin duties in September, and heartfelt thanks to outgoing officers. The meeting adjourned for refreshments and visiting. Athena welcomes all interested women of the community to join in helping with a multitude of community projects focusing on children, education, music and the arts.
