Edgerton residents braved the frigid weather to counter protesters at Edgerton United Methodist Church.
Protesters from a Topeka Church were met with a counter protest in Edgerton Jan. 17.
Topeka protesters were apparently responding to an article in The Kansas City Star regarding an Edgerton pastor who came out as gay. The Topeka church is known for its anti-gay protests at events and funerals.
According to estimates, Edgerton residents outnumbered the Topeka Church about two to one. Temperatures were in the single digits.
Both sides carried signs and exchanged a few taunts.
There were 7-8 protesters from a Topeka Church and approximately 20
counter protesters, according to Deputy Claire Young, Johnson County Sheriff public information officer.
“The entire event lasted about 30 minutes,” Young said. There were three deputies present, and there were no arrests.
Young said the sheriff’s office is appreciative of the cooperation of all
that were present.
