The Gardner Athena GFWC met at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 16, 2015, at the Perkins Restaurant in Gardner, Kansas. Members answered roll call with a fact about Charles Dickens. Some surprising particulars about Dickens include that in 1865, Dickens was involved in the famed Staplehurst rail crash in which seven train carriages toppled off a bridge that was under repair. Dickens narrowly avoided catastrophe as his own car was the first to be spared once the train finally stopped, however the incident scarred him mentally. He later wrote, “The Signal Man” which was partly derived from this personal experience. Another interesting fact is that Dickens was keenly interested in the paranormal and has been linked to the famous paranormal investigation group, “The Ghost Club” of London. The December program involved all present by each sharing a special Christmas memory, a favorite carol, or favorite poem. Many fun and heartfelt stories were shared. Committee reports were given and a reminder that donated clothing was being accepted after the meeting for Hope House, a resource and safe place for persons of domestic violence.  The meeting was adjourned and a nice meal and holiday festivities were enjoyed. Athena welcomes all interested women of the community to join in helping with a multitude of community projects focusing on children, education, music and the arts.
