Since the fall of 2010, Gardner Edgerton High School has been a part of the Eastern Kansas League, but that is about to change. Official notice was made today that GEHS has accepted the invitation to become the newest member of the Sunflower League.
With the opening of the newest Olathe School District high school, Olathe West, in 2017, the Sunflower League automatically gains a new member. To maintain an even number of teams, the League chose to invite another high school into the League to expand to a total of 14 teams.
On Sept. 11, Gardner Edgerton High School received an invitation to join the Sunflower League. The GEHS administration notified all current Eastern Kansas League members of the invitation. The administration organized a committee of six key athletic and activities staff members to review the information provided by the Sunflower League. In addition, an all-school meeting was available for staff to offer input into the decision-making process.
“I value the input from our staff and feel that it was important for the high school community to be a part of the decision making.” said Mark Meyer, GEHS principal. “The Sunflower League will continue to meet the needs of our students and provide anabundance of opportunities in athletics or activities. The Sunflower League has a great reputation. We are honored and look forward to being its newest member.”
GEHS’s affiliation with the Eastern Kansas League will conclude in June 2017, with the exception of football which has a commitment through the 2017 season.
