The Gardner Athena GFWC met at 1:00 pm on October 21 at the Gardner branch of the Johnson County Library. The October program, presented by member Ruth Hermon, showcased some of the first projects undertaken by GFWC which was federated in 1922. Those projects included the organization of a local PTA, introduction of a hot school lunch program, creation of a small 100 book library, and carpet rag collections for donation to the Veterans Hospital in Leavenworth for weaving into rugs.  She noted that while the type of group projects may have changed, the group’s focus remains the same. Committees reported on current projects, and a short report was given by Cathy Baker who attended the Mississippi Valley Conference. There was also discussion on the upcoming second district convention in Baldwin City. The meeting adjourned for refreshments and visiting. The next meeting is set for 1:00 pm on November 18 at the home of an Athena member. Athena welcomes all interested women of the community to join in helping with a multitude of community projects focusing on children, education, music and the arts.
