Falling behind 21-0, the Gardner Edgerton High School Blazers dropped a 21-7 decision at Blue Valley Northwest High School in second round district 6A action last Friday night.
Northwest, 2-6, went up 7-0 with less than two minutes left in the first quarter on a 70-yard touchdown run by Jack Knutson. The point-after by Rahto Hunter was good.
Northwest added two second quarter scores before the Blazers continued with a nine yard touchdown pass from GEHS junior quarterback Griffin Johns to Jace Sprague. The PAT by Austin George was good, and that was all the scoring for the night.
Despite the loss, GEHS got 47 yards on 17 carries from Hunter Skeens. Keegan Michael had 17 yards on four carries. Zach Bass had four yards on two totes.
Through the air, Johns connected on five of 17 passes for 111 yards and a nine-yard touchdown strike to Sprague.
Top defensive play came from linebackers Austin Bond with 14 tackles, Jonas Pippitt with 15 tackles, Tyler Henry with 13 tackles, and defensive backs Jared Highfill with nine tackles, Michael Kittleson with 10 tackles, and Zach Bass with eight tackles.
Sprague caught three passes for 67 yards, and Bass hauled in two catches for 44 yards.
The Blazers, 1-7, host Olathe South High School, 1-7, on Friday night. North is still smarting from a 49-16 loss to Blue Valley.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the district stadium.
