James “Jim” Elliott Guilinger, 85, of Olathe, KS died September 28, 2015 at Olathe Hospice House.
Jim was born November 26, 1929 in Grant County Oklahoma to James Reuben and Bernice Pearl (Fisk) Guilinger. He graduated from Arkansas City Kansas High School in 1947. Jim also attended Johnson County Kansas Community College. He married Delores M Davis on May 29, 1949 in Newkirk, OK. They had two children; James Michael Guilinger and Debra D Guilinger Lind. He served in the US Air Force for 4 years active duty during the Korean Conflict and 12 years in the reserves. Jim was employed by John Morrell Meat Packers and was transferred from Arkansas City, KS to Kansas City, KS where he worked for 30 years. When John Morrell left Kansas City he went to work for the Shawnee Mission (Kansas) School District as a carpenter and retired after 19 years. They made their home in Overland Park, KS before moving to Olathe in 1979. While Mike was a boy, Jim served in many youth leadership capacities including Scout Master of Troop 392 receiving many meritorious awards. He was also a member of the PTA. He was a member of the Gardner First Presbyterian Church and the Overland Park American Legion. Jim was proud to be a Mason and was Past Master of Gardner Lodge 65 and served as the Lodge Secretary for many years. He was evenly proud to be a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Eastern Star and the Abdallah Shriners belonging to the Tin Lizzie Unit driving a miniature Tin Lizzie in the parades and loved to see the kids’ faces as they watched. Jim will be dearly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and a brother. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Delores; son Mike and wife Deb, Olathe, KS; daughter Debra and husband Paul Lind, Merriam, KS; grandchildren: Peter Lind, Daniel Lind, and Amy Lind; four step-grandchildren: Jesse Lind, Callie Chase, Ryan Lucito and Justin Lucito; nine step-great grandchildren; two sisters Elaine Jordan, Bonner Springs, KS and Patricia Thomas, Wichita, KS; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service 10:30 am Sat., October 3, 2015 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. Burial follows at Gardner Cemetery. Visitation 6:00-8:00 pm Fri., October 2, 2015 at the funeral home with a Masonic service at 8:00. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
