The Gardner Edgerton High School Blazer football team opens its season against defending state champion Shawnee Mission East High School on Sept. 4.
Following four weeks of intense practice sessions, GEHS Coach Marvin Diener and the Blazer squad will kick-off the season at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 at the Shawnee Mission South District Stadium, 7401 Johnson Dr.
“The kids have really been working hard to prepare for East,” said Diener, now in his 10th year at the Blazer helm. “It’s been good to get more time to prepare for a very talented and well coached team in East. We look forward to the opportunity.”
Diener has turned the quarterback reins over to junior Griffin Johns. Joining Johns in the backfield will be sophomore Keegan Michael and junior speedster Hunter Skeens.

When Johns throws, a majority of his aerials will be aimed at junior receiver Zach Bass and also seniors Hunter Boyt and Tony Walker. He will also target sophomore Jace Sprague.
Diener likes the look of his defense especially in the back seven and secondary.
