The city of Gardner has had to discontinue accepting expired and unwanted medications through the Prescription Drug Take-Back Program.
The program, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), ended late last year.  Due to federal funding cutbacks and regulation changes, the city of Gardner has had to join most other law enforcement agencies nationwide in discontinuing the local program. The collection box in the Gardner Police Department lobby is no longer available for drop off.
The city wishes to recognize its partners in this program. Gardner Health Mart provided a collection box in the police station lobby, allowing for citizens to take their unwanted or expired medications directly to the police station for disposal, and the Gardner Price Chopper participated in a public collection event with the Gardner Police Department semi-annually for five years.
Citizens should now contact the Drug Enforcement Administration Office of Diversion Control Registration Center at (800) 882-9539 to find authorized disposal locations in their area, or visit to learn how to properly dispose of medications.
