Battling until the end, the Gardner Edgerton High School lady Blazer softball team dropped a hard fought 4-3 decision to Olathe North High School. The loss in the quarter finals of 6A state play ended the Blazers’ season.
Fourth seeded Olathe North, which boasts a record of 19 wins and 4 losses, overcame eight errors and held off a late Blazer rally to advance.
North took the advantage early, finishing the second inning with a 2-0 lead, but the Blazers were able to tie the game in the fifth inning. The GEHS team took advantage of four Eagle errors to score two runs.
The tie score was short lived, as North scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead, 4-2.
GEHS rallied in the seventh inning with a run, but left the bases loaded and could not complete the comeback. Abby Cox took the tough luck pitching loss.
“The kids know a trip to state has not happened in a long time,” said GEHS Coach Joanne Calvin. “They know they are young, and the goal is to get here again.”
Kiana Baderdeen started the seventh inning with a single, but Abby Cox reached on an error. A sac bunt by Katie Miller followed and Baderdeen was
brought home on a single by Malibu McIntire. But the rally fell short, and GEHS ended its season with a 4-3 loss.
