Gonzalo Garcia has joined the city of Gardner to lead its utilities department, which is comprised of the water, wastewater and electric divisions. He has more than 25 years of utility experience, working in both the United States and abroad.
As director, Garcia will operate, implement, plan and direct a comprehensive utility program; determine policy and direction for utility functions; manage personnel, budgeting, capital improvements and long and short-term utility projects.
Garcia began his career at Florida Power and Light, serving in roles such as electrical supervisor, power resource specialist, operations manager and operations assistant superintendent. He later joined Duke Energy, the largest electric power holding company in the U.S., working there since 1997. During that time, he served in several leadership roles around the world, with his most recent position as the operations regional director in Lima, Peru.
Garcia holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with an emphasis in control system design and energy conservation from Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. He also attained a master’s degree in business administration from Tulane University in New Orleans.
“While I have been fortunate to provide a wide range of utility services throughout the world, I find this to be an excellent opportunity as well as a privilege. This is a new position for the city, and I have been charged with the task to help administration define what a utilities program looks like for Gardner,” said Garcia. “I look forward to learning the city needs and applying my years of experience in developing an effective utilities program that will provide the highest level of service to the Gardner community.”
Garcia will provide utility services from the city’s electric facility formerly known as Gardner Energy.
