Several Gardner Edgerton High School groups will travel next year. USD 231 board members approved three school trips that may put more than 200 students on the road next year.
Members of the Gardner Edgerton High School dance team will travel to Orlando, Fla., between Christmas and New Year’s. Members of the squad will perform at a college football game during the 2015 Russell Athletic Bowl. Approximately 20 dancers will depart from the airport the day after Christmas and return on Dec. 31.
Board members also approved an out-of-state trip for the GEHS Madrigals. Todd Burd, music director, said approximately 24 Madrigals will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City, during a March trip next year. The trip is scheduled for March 16-20. Burd said the invitation to attend the trip would be extended to other participants in the vocal music program at GEHS.
When the band travels, they will take busses rather than fly. Members of the GEHS band will travel to Nashville and Chattanooga, Tenn., before traveling to Orlando March 13-20, 2016. During their travels, band and orchestra members will confer with instrumentalists to hone their craft. Band director Will Biggs said he anticipates approximately 140 student musicians will take the trip.
In other business, board members:
• approved the purchase of new copiers and entered a five-year agreement to service copiers.
• approved the purchase of print management software. All printing, copying and servicing contracts approved totaled $385,599.
• approved expanding the district’s managed investment options for employee contributions to KPERS 457 Plans. District employees can now use two managed investment organizations to make contributions.
The next school board meeting is set for 6 p.m. on June 8. New board members will be sworn-in during the next meeting.
