It was a rainy afternoon for the Wheatridge Middle School Mustangs as they traveled to Spring Hill to compete in an invitational May 5.  The storms held off just long enough to allow most field event competition. Most running events were canceled.
Several WMS athletes medaled.
In seventh grade boys’ competition, WMS’ Teven McKelvey took first in the high jump, leaping 5-feet 2-inches. He also took fourth in the 100 meter dash. Marcus Thomas tossed the shot put 36-feet 11-inches to claim gold. Mitch Lumley took third in the 1600 meter run. Caden LeCluyse tied for bronze in the long jump.
In seventh grade girls’ competition, several Mustangs had noteworthy performances. Taylor Grasser took the top spot in the long jump and second in the 100 meter dash. Alyx VanRheen took third in the long jump.
Kaili Donham took bronze in the high jump, while Zoe Daniels placed third in two events, the 100 meter hurdles and the 100 meter dash.
In eighth grade competition, Rodolfo Berrum ran the 1600 meter run in a season best time to take gold.
Sae Alcorn-Tisinger took fourth place in the 100 meter dash. Timothy Stuart also took fourth in the 3200 meter run.
Several members of the WMS eighth grade girls’ team placed. Ashlyn Anderson leaped 5-feet 1-inch to take first in the high jump.
Skyler Bartels earned gold in the 100 meter dash, while Jamie Gaither crossed the finish line first in the 3200 meter run. Kyla Shappell took second in the high jump and fourth in the long jump. WMS teammates Natalie Balog, Kaylee Cox and Sawyer Brooks took second, third and fourth place respectively in the 1600 meter run.
The Mustangs look forward to competing at the Frontier League track meet on Saturday, May 9 at Trail Ridge Middle School in Gardner.
This will be their last meet of the season.
