A concert series is coming to Cornerstone Park this summer.
Gardner Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Stewart said the city has booked three acts for a series of outdoor concerts.
“We’re excited about it,” Stewart said. “A lot of them are local bands – local to the Kansas City area – that will be playing.”
He hopes the free, family-friendly entertainment will draw people to Cornerstone Park on south Center Street once a month beginning at the end of May.
There’s a small amphitheater in the park, which sits just north of the Gardner Aquatic Center, and Stewart noted this summer won’t be the first time live music has performed there. A series of concerts during the Johnson County Fair has been staged there in the past.
Parking could be a challenge during the event, but Stewart said the evening hours should open up some parking spaces at the aquatic center, and guests will also be able to use the overflow fairground parking for the downtown events.
The acts will play a variety of musical genres.
The La De Dahs, acoustic cover band, will kick off the series on May 30.
The acoustic band, comprised of a trio of musicians, plays a mix of pop, rock and alternative music. They have an extensive set of covers including songs from the 1960s to today.
The Magnetics will take to the Cornerstone Park stage on June 20. The cover band plays hits by some popular recording artists, including Bruno Mars, Coldplay, the Lumineers and Prince. The Kansas City-area band has played VIP stages for Coldplay and the Dave Matthews Band.
Soca Jukebox will conclude the summer series on July 18. The band is known for its Caribbean-style featuring the steel drum, rock sounds and vocals. The five-piece ensemble plays a diverse list of musical genres, but is known specifically for its Latin and reggae-style twist.
In addition to the summer series at Cornerstone Park, a fourth concert is scheduled in Gardner this summer. The Festival on the Trails committee recently announced Mark Chesnutt, a country star, will headline the annual event on June 13. Atlanta Rhythm Section, a southern rock band, will appear on the Festival stage on June 12.
The La De Dahs will take the Cornerstone stage at 6 p.m. on May 30. The Magnetics play at 7 p.m. on June 20, and Soca Jukebox takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. on July 18.
