Dr. Virginia Lee (England) Tucker, 84, passed away March 16, 2015 at Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kan.
Virginia was born April 16, 1930 in Newton, Kan to Ruth Frasier (Walton) and John L. England. Virginia met Donald Ray Tucker of Emporia, Kan while both were attending medical school. They married on September 1, 1955 in Pittsburgh, Kan. After graduating from the KU Medical School in 1957, she did her internship with her husband, Dr. Donald R. Tucker, at DC General Hospital in Washington DC. Her residence was done at KU where she became interested in Pediatric Nephrology research under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Darrow.
Teaching was always important to Dr. Tucker. She dedicated her life to provide and advance the best medical care for the children of Kansas. From 1962-74 she taught pediatric medicine at KU and returned as a professor of pediatric medicine in 1998. In 1974, she joined the Indian Health Service at Cherokee, N.C. They spent four years (1974-1978) living on the Cherokee Indian Reservation at Cherokee, N.C, where Virginia was their doctor. Upon her return to Kansas in 1978, she worked at the Health Center at Haskell Institute at Lawrence, Kan. In 1981-1989, she was Associate Director of the Kansas Department of Health in Maternal/Child Health and worked with Kansas Crippled Children. At the time of her retirement, Dr. Tucker was a Professor of Pediatric Medicine at the Univ. of Kansas Medical School.
Among her many honors were: Distinguished service award by the Kansas Assoc. of School Health; the Samuel Crumbine award from the Kansas Public Health Assoc.; NIH grants; CDC grants; a grant for prevention of obesity in adolescents (1996); fourteen publications and four manuals.
Dr. Tucker held membership and leadership in the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research, The American Assoc. of Pediatrics, the Society for Adolescent Medicine, the Kansas Assoc. of School Health, the Douglas County Medical Society and the First Presbyterian Church of Gardner.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Donald. Virginia is survived by William “Bill” England, Oxford, Md., James England, Broomfield, Colo and Ann McKelvey, Greenfield, Ind. and many nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by her former colleagues, patients, friends and especially her family.
Her body has been donated to the Willed Body Program at KU Medical Center. A joint memorial service will be held on March 28, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Aberdeen Village, 17500 W. 119th St., in Olathe, Kan for Dr. Tucker and her husband, Dr. Donald R.
