Johnson County Fire District No. 1 engines responded to a potential fire at Sunflower Elementary School on March 2.
School was not in session when firefighters received the call at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday evening.
“There were only a couple of people there – the principal and a few maintenance people,” fire division chief Jerry Holly said.
Firefighters weren’t on the scene long. In about 30 minutes, they discovered the cause – a a burnt-out element in a furnace in one of the classrooms. There was no damage to the classroom, only minor damage to the heating unit itself.
Maintenance staff replaced a heating element in the furnace.
“It was really minor,” Holly said.
