The Great Mall of the Great Plains will close later this year.
Developers of the property announced the closure in a Feb. 16 press release. The 786,000 square-foot mall opened in 1997. At one point, it was home to more than 100 retail shops.
“The decision to close was difficult, but one that was guided by very compelling economic realities,” a press release reads. “The development began to face struggles soon after it opened in 1997, and has been unable to recover in the intervening years due to a variety of factors, including the economic downturn and changes in customers’ shopping habits.”
The property developers are working with the Olathe Chamber of Commerce to determine what to do with the property in the future.
Lease terminations will be given to tenants and individual store closings will be posted on the Great Mall of the Great Plains’ website and Facebook page.
The mall will close sometime in mid-to-late fall of this year according to the release.
