Special to The Gardner News
Bob & Phyllis Thomen are longtime residents of Gardner who have raised a family here and contributed greatly to the community.
Bob Thomen lived in Gardner in his youth and attended Gardner schools. After graduation, he continued his education just down the road at Baker University. That is where Bob met and soon after married Phyllis.
After a couple years with the US Air Force, they returned to Gardner for good. Bob opened up his dental practice in the old Reece Hospital, later building a dedicated office on Park Street. He provided dental care to Gardner citizens for decades. Bob also served 10 years on the school board and was 1993 Citizen of the Year.
Phyllis worked in the dental practice with Bob and was on the city council in the late 1970’s. That led to being elected as Mayor of Gardner in 1981. She held office through 1989.
She recalls the creation of the first ball fields, the hiring of the first City Administrator and the building of the Senior Citizens Center. She was also there when the city got their first computer.
Bob & Phyllis raised their family here and have always called Gardner home. They have contributed to the community in lasting ways and we are pleased
to tribute them as Hometown Heroes
